Here are some entries I made in a pocket book while in Vietnam
with Bravo Battery. I edited quite a bit to just show where the
Battery was during my tour. It does not include all the fire missions
or other events that took place.
Reported in to BLT 2/3 aboard Tripoli. Only skeleton crew left, the
rest of the Bn is ashore on Operation.
Thought I'd spend the night aboard but went ashore around 1630 to join outfit.
At Bn CP. We're set up someplace between Danang & Phu Bai, close to
2/7's CP on Highway 1.
Displaced to different area (LSA), surrounded on three sides by
hills, the 4th side leads to the sea. Have 105mm here about fifty
Approx. 0800 received about 30 incoming rounds. 60mm. 10 men wounded,
no KIA. Our 81's fired back and air strike was called. Recon patrol
sent up to area where mortars were coming from. Spotted about 18 VC.
Some more Arty & air strikes concentrated on hill.
Informed we will no longer be a SLF after 1 Dec. Will be replacing 3/1
someplace south of Danang.
After a wet, cold & windy night we are going into Danang (FLC area)
for about 4 days before going back aboard ship. While there records
books will be audited, shots, etc.
Back loaded aboard ship. Got shitty every night while at FLC.
Getting ready for Operation tomorrow. Gear everywhere.
17Nov67 Set up at An Hoa airstrip. Living in hardbacks. This is 2/5's
home. The line companies are in the field. The other day Gen Houchmuth
was killed in a Helo. Heard helo was accidentally it by Arty.
Back aboard ship (just me). Am being transferred to "B" 1/12 as comm chief.
Back at An Hoa airstrip again waiting for helo lift to Battery who are
on hill 65.
On hill 65 finally after trying for 3 days to get a lift.
Displaced to 3/1's area. Built up area. Hardbacks, mess hall, etc. Nice place.
There's a light plane flying around our CP playing Christmas music
over a loudspeaker. Close to Christmas.
New Years Eve (1800). Suppose to be cease fire until 0600 2 Jan. Small
arms fire incoming aprox 2200, during our poker game. Losing.
TET year of the monkey & big enemy offensive. Fired over 10,000
rounds. Had incoming rounds which hit outside perimeter.
Displaced from this place (Combat area 413), north between Danang &
Phu Bai. Back out in the field again. (Phu Loc)
Had 3 incoming rounds last night (60mm) no one hurt. Hear we're moving
further north on the 8th.
Moved north again to Phu Bai. Set up outside the perimeter.
We're moving further north again on an Operation on the 27th I think.
Had incoming rockets & mortars at 0300 this morning. None hit our
position though. Some hit the airstrip & 1 Col. was killed from the
Moved north through Hue, past Camp Evans, through Quang Tri and stayed
overnight at Dong Ha.
Left Dong Ha at 1030 past Camp Carrol to a place called Cau lu. On an
Operation called Pegasus. We're located about 8 miles from Khe Sanh.
Moved a couple miles down the road. Supposed to have moved with 2/3
further north about 2 miles from Khe Sanh but higher ups said no so
we're left behind.
On the 17th we moved again closer to Khe Sanh about 2 miles away. Had
incoming rockets the first 3 days.
None on the 21st & 22nd. On the 21st we had 3 KIA on an ammo run to
Cau lu. They were ambushed.
Spent all of May here at LZ Hawk.
Moved again back down the road to Cau lu. And as usual they put us
right out on the perimeter.
On the move again. This time to a place called "Charlie Two", located
off highway 9 between Cam Lo and Dong Ha on a road to Con Thien which
isn't far away.
Moved to a place called Mai Loc on the Cua Viet river. Dusty & windy place.
Back to Dong Ha. Cold beer at club tonight. Rest of Battery still at
Mai Loc waiting for boats for transportation.
At Camp Carrol.
At the Rockpile with the gunny & Skipper as forward party to set up
position for the rest of the btry.
Moved to the Rockpile.
Had incoming rockets around 1600 today. Hit all around us. No one hurt
but caused a few fires.
Incoming rockets again today at 1630. 3 men wounded . Also the MRC-109
(radio jeep) was hit. Pissed me off.
Off to our rear at Phu Bai for R&R to Okinawa on the 30th.
Back at the Rockpile with the Btry. Back to the dirt & grime. Back to
the incoming. This place sucks. Monsoon season.
Moved to position right below Camp Carrol on Highway 9.
Back to the Rockpile again.
Incoming arty around 1930. 1 man WIA.
Incoming rockets started around 1545. Hits in our position. 1 gun was
knocked out of action. Our bunker got hit. The Gunny & corpsman were
hit. I came through without a scratch. My left ear was ringing for
awhile. Still can't hear 100%. That was too close a call.
Incoming arty at 0415 this morning. 3 rounds. 2200-Incoming again.
Had sporadic incoming all last night until about 0600 this morning. We
may also be helo lifted this afternoon-West.
Moved NE from the Rockpile on choppers to the top of some hill to set
up Fire Base.
Found out this place is called LZ Bird. Next to Mutters Ridge.
Btry moved to another hill, LZ Pete I think.
I'm back at rear at Camp Carrol. On my way home. Flight date is 26Oct68.
